Whether is to escape from the hustle and bustle of the main road connecting Hase Enoden Station and the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) at Kotoku-in during holidays, or just for a relaxing saunter on a sunny day, one may walk into the small paths behind the huts and shops facing the main road of Hase, Kamakura. That was exactly what I did on Saturday, and I came across this new serene spot — Third Rock Cafe. It had everything you need when you want to sit down and relax — a homely vibe, comfy seats, tasty snacks with drinks, and pets! It was a pet-friendly cafe so some customers actually sat down cuddling with their poodles while enjoying their afternoon chats. The cafe owner spoke fluent English so communication was smooth. Friendly staff there served me with desserts par excellence — hand-made caramel cookies, chocolate mousse and a cup of matcha latte. Soft drinks were also available so I also ordered a bottle of ginger ale as well after gobbling up all the scrumptious snacks. A homely cafe might not be the first thing coming to one’s mind when visiting the traditional streets or temples in Kamakura, but this cafe exactly embodies everything what visitors often regard as “Japanese” — tranquility, friendliness and refined tastes. If you are visiting the Great Buddha there next time, why not also walk for a few more steps and stop by at this cafe to grab a few cookies and drinks while enjoying its tranquility & hospitality?

Got the taco wrap and strawberry matcha latte.. a perfect lunch after visiting the great buddha just around the corner. The staff are wonderfully kind and although the food took a little while to arrive, the chill vibes and lovely atmosphere meant that was no hardship at all. As long as you have a little time to spare, I recommend this place whole-heartedly.

Must visit location, if you are in Tokyo/Kamakura area. The owner Nobuko, followed her passion to start a restaurant and it shows in each meal served. Dishes accommodate for dietary restrictions ( vegan, lactose, gluten-free). Very close to the Hasedera temple with Hydrangea gardens and to the historic Buddha statue. There is even a guitar available for the music enthusiasts to perform for the audience.

Really close to the Daibutsu, but one street back from the main drag, so it’s a welcome respite from the crowds. The terrace looks great when the weather is good, pet friendly as well, but it was a bit windy when we went. Inside was a nice and airy atmosphere, really welcoming staff, English not a problem. Nice selection of food and drinks (alcoholic and coffee, tea) and even the standard sizes were quite filling and larger than most Japanese cafe portions, although they can do even larger portions if you’re really hungry. The cookies and cakes are all made in-house, and we got some to take away as gifts for our neighbors, although they almost got eaten before we could give them! Well worth a visit if you’re in Kamakura.

Delightful little cafe with patio extension for good weather. My matcha latte was amazing and generous. The Japanese owner is extremely kind and English-fluent. It was a great rest stop for us to escape the rain on our way to the Buddha at Kotoku-in. Highly recommend.

Very friendly and interesting owner, who makes all food by herself. The food is absolutely amazing with generous portions. We ordered alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and there were many options. The owner also gave us travel tips for our time in Tokyo. 6/5 restaurant!!
